Most of us prefer to buy by the coast - not in the hot, dry heart of central Spain –so the less expensive costas are a good place to start. In fact at the top of our Best Places to Buy Abroad 2022 index is bargain hotspot Torrevieja in Alicante.

Torrevieja

You can still find buy bank repossessed apartments for around €60,000 – check out the Polaris World golf resorts such as La Torre, El Valle and Hacienda Riquelme.

Bargain properties for sale in Spain can also be found further south along the coast near Aguilas and into Almeria, which offers coastal Andalusia at a lower price tag than the Costa del Sol. Avoid pricy Mojacar and look inland to Albox, Arboleas, Vera and Los Gallardos.

Some of the cheapest properties in Spain might be found in the numerous inland villages in Valencia and Andalusia. Popular with expats, the small town of Coin is only 30 minutes’ drive from Malaga at the foot of the Sierra de Mijas mountains, and you can get a four-bedroom townhouse there for less than €100,000, or if you head an hour further into the hills, your money goes further: a four-bedroom townhouse in the little town of Olvera can be found for under €40,000.
