Where are they now? Nature-loving retirees in Costa Rica

Retirees George and Gillian Pook from Chepstow were seeking a home on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica after a life spent globe-trotting. The keen naturists bought one of the homes shown on the programme for £87k and are selling up in the UK so they can move out. Here, Gillian, 63, shares their colourful story.

"We've travelled most of the world through George's work career in education administration (and lived in Hong Kong, Malaysia and Fiji) but we had always wanted to visit Costa Rica, especially after a stint in Bolivia where George studies monkeys for his PhD in animal behaviour.

Costa Rica's civilized, not miles from anywhere, it's got a great coastline and national parks and really ticks all our boxes. Why not retire somewhere with all that amazing wildlife around: toucans, sloths, monkeys...

"We liked the hippy feel of the old fishing town of Puerto Viejo [de Limon] that is famed for surfing but because of its large Caribbean population, has a vibe that is not typical of Costa Rica. We bought a three-bedroom chalet style cabin with verandah and double-height living room and the purchase process was painless, with the help of an American lawyer. We completed in March and the agent [Caribe Sur: gave us a lovely welcome: the steps of the property were strewn with hibiscus flowers and laid on beer, coconut water and chocolates! We met the gardener who identified all the exotic plants for us and it was even nicer than we remembered.

"We need to sell our four-bed country house in Gloucestershire before we can move out to Costa Rica - and will keep a small base in Blandford - but then we hope to live there for five or ten years - until our health fails.

George plans to volunteer for the jaguar rescue centre and I am going to paint. Until then the house is available to rent [through Caribe Sur's Green Property Management service]."
