Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), Dutch post-impressionist painter, is one of the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. Born in Zundert, Netherlands, Van Gogh's life was marked by misfortune, poverty and mental health problems, culminating in his suicide at the age of 37. Despite these adversities, his work is known for its beauty, emotion and color, profoundly influencing 20th century art.
Van Gogh began his artistic career late, at the age of 27, after failing in previous occupations. He dedicated himself to drawing and painting, studying on his own and experimenting with different techniques and styles. His early work includes moody portraits and rural scenes, reflecting the influence of Dutch realist painters. However, it was his move to France that marked a vibrant transformation in his style. Influenced by the Impressionists and Neo-Impressionists in Paris, Van Gogh adopted brighter colors, expressive brushstrokes, and everyday themes, evolving into the unique style for which he is known today.
During his lifetime, Van Gogh produced more than 2,000 works of art, including approximately 860 oil paintings and more than 1,300 watercolors, drawings and sketches. His most famous works, produced over a period of just a decade, include 'The Starry Night', 'The Sunflowers', 'Room in Arles' and a series of self-portraits. These works are notable for their emotional use of color and dynamic brushstrokes, which express his turbulent emotional state and his relentless search for solace and hope through art.
Despite his genius, Van Gogh sold only one painting during his lifetime, living in obscurity and depending financially on his brother Theo. His mental health progressively deteriorated, leading to hospitalization and the infamous episode in which he cut off part of his own ear. Van Gogh died in Auvers-sur-Oise, France, of a gunshot wound, in an act generally accepted as suicide.
Today, Van Gogh is celebrated for his emotional intensity, innovative techniques, and lasting impact on 20th-century art. His works reach auction records and are featured in museums around the world, witnessing his transformation from a little-recognized artist in his lifetime to an eternal icon of art.
