Situated in the south of the Costa Blanca is the beautiful Orihuela Costa. It stretches from Alicante to Pilar de la Horadada and is on the border with Murcia.  The Orihuela Costa comprises the coastal towns of La Zenia, Playa Flamenca, Cabo Roig, Dehesa de Campoamor, Villamartin, Los Dolses, La Fuente, Pilar de Campoverde, Los Montesinos and San Miguel de Salinas. Southwest of Torrevieja, this area of Costa Blanca is famous for its beaches and choice of fabulous golf courses. The coast is a suburb of the city of Orihuela and is about 20 kilometres from the city.
Stretching over 16 km, Orihuela Costa's beautiful 'Blue Flag' beaches are clean and safe and very popular in summer for holidays, but during the 'off-season, they are still heavily used. With 320 days of sunshine a year, nothing is more relaxing and stress-free than strolling along one of these beautiful beaches in the quieter seasons. Christmas Day is a lovely time, with primary tourists on the beach wearing Santa hats, opening their champagne bottles and picnic boxes and enjoying the day on the beach. New Year's Day is when the local Spanish residents prefer to take their stroll along the coast.  When the weather is a little cooler, walking along the beach to Torrevieja from Orihuela Costa and back is lovely. The beautiful Orihuela Costa is a fabulous place for residents and holidaymakers alike. The World Health Organisation has rated this area as one of the healthiest places to live.
If you leave Orihuela Costa, you can head further south to the beautiful beaches of Mar Menor and Murcia, where you can take a mud bath to rejuvenate and cleanse the skin, or to the beautiful city of Cartagena, with so much history you won't know where to start. Enjoy the beautiful "marbled streets", the "Walled City", the historic Roman Theatre, the magnificent architecture and much more. Cartagena is a port city with a naval base and beautiful sandy beaches. The beach of Cala Cortina is only 4 kilometres from the city, so the peace and tranquillity of this area are well worth a visit.
