Pyla and its surrounding area are mainly engaged in agriculture, specifically grain crops and olive groves. There are also sizeable vineyards (in the past, they dominated the area and played a big part in the development of regional farming right up to the 1970s. Grapes were grown for wine and vinegar production among others). The village is pretty green and as you drive in, it seems like a modern and comfortable place to live and stay.
