Anche se Tresana porta il nome del Comune, il capoluogo e centro vitale del territorio è Barbarasco, sede comunale dal 1818. Qui si può visitare la chiesa parrocchiale in stile barocco dedicata a San Quirico, costruita nella seconda metà del XVIII secolo su un preesistente edificio sacro. L'adiacente torre campanaria fu eretta nel 1833.
Nella frazione Villa, immersa nel verde dei boschi, si trova il castello della Principessa Amalia di Baviera, grande estimatrice del territorio lunigianese.
A Giovagallo invece restano solo i ruderi di quello che fu l'imponente maniero dimora di Morello Malaspina, il condottiero guelfo che guidò i lucchesi e i fiorentini contro la ghibellina Pistoia, conquistata dopo ben undici mesi di assedio.
A Riccò si trovano i ruderi dell'oratorio di San Rocco, datato 1400.
Tresana è situata su una collinetta e sormontata dal suo castello, ristrutturato recentemente.
La zona, ricca di sorgenti e corsi d'acqua, è prevalentemente montuosa e collinare.
Le principali attività lavorative sono ricollegabili ai prodotti del bosco e sottobosco di castagno e cerro, alla vite, all'ulivo e altri alberi da frutta.
