Full Description

This beautiful old stone water mill is set in the north of the Gard, quite near the southern Ardèche border. Part of the mill used to be used for drying chestnuts (this was once an important industry in the Cévennes), and raising silk worms. The nearest large town is Alès, 8 miles, but you are also just 24 miles from Uzès, and 36 miles from Nimes, the nearest airport....Montpellier is 60 miles away. However two minutes away by car is the small village of Les Mages, which has shops, PO, Pharmacy, bread shop, weekly market, medical services, and a very good restaurant!
The house is built in a U shape, around a beautiful courtyard, which looks out onto the river, which runs all along the side of the mill...there is however NO risk of flooding!
The house is 500m2, of which 350m2 are renovated. Currently there are 7/8 bedrooms...but other rooms could also be added as bedrooms. There are four bathrooms. In addition there is a TV/projection room, laundry room, office, store rooms, kitchen, sitting/dining room, and a large conservatory which is used as a summer kitchen/dining room, with sliding doors.
The grounds are beautiful. You can walk along the riverside, play tennis on the excellent hard court, swim in the large pool.
It is just three miles from the medieval market town of St Ambroix, which has primary and secondary schools, three supermarkets, and lots of individual food shops. There is a very large lively weekly market, and the town hold many festivals and antique fairs. There is a weekly "vide greniers" every Saturday in the main square. It is just 20 minutes from the beautifully renovated village of Barjac, which also holds markets and a very famous antique fair.
In this region swimming is popular in isolated and magical surrounding rivers, and other outdoor activities include canoeing, horse-riding, kayaking, cycling and mountain climbing. There are famous caves including the Caverne Pont d'Arc, with its cave paintings, recently opened to the public. The Ardèche Gorges are very close by, and are not to be missed. You can swim in the rivers, go to water parks, visit lovely old walled towns, have a coffee in the sunshine or go wine tasting at one of the many vineyards.
