What can £300,000 buy in Spain?

Despite interest rate levels and high inflation, UK house prices continue to rise steadily. The latest government figures show the average house price is now around £300,000.

With the cost of living squeezing households and the ongoing prospect of higher taxes, it's not surprising that many people are wondering whether they might find a better quality of life – and a bigger house – overseas.

In Spain, you can still get a lot of bang for your buck, whether on the Costa Blanca, in Murcia or on the Costa del Sol.

Here we take a look at your three favourite areas to buy a home and see what £300k buys you. We are allowing for 11% buying costs in Spain to keep the property budget around £270,000.

Costa Blanca

What can £300k buy on the Costa Blanca?

Far and away the property search favourite for many good reasons: weather, accessibility, amenities – and, yes, affordability.

The good news is that you can find a great choice of properties, from apartments to townhouses and even villas if you look a little inland.

In Torrevieja or Ciudad Quesada – two of the big hitters – the average budget for buyers is around £223k, which buys you a resale three-bedroom townhouse or a large new-build apartment.

This budget also gets you a bright, modern new-build townhouse in an area such as Los Montesinos. Look at developments such as Vistabella for properties around £275k.

Fancy Villamartín for all its amenities and expat culture? You can find a furnished three-bedroom townhouse with private balconies and a rooftop solarium for around £300k, or even a smaller new-build property and have some change left over.

About 10–15 minutes' drive inland, you'll find a good choice of options in Algorfa, from high-quality apartments to townhouses or even a three-bedroom new-build bungalow.

Head further inland and you can find a detached villa with a private pool for the same budget. Look at villages such as Catral – a low-key rural location popular with retirees.

Costa del Sol

What can £300k buy on the Costa del Sol?

Prices on the Costa del Sol have been increasing as it has become one of mainland Spain's most popular destinations for digital nomads, entrepreneurs and families relocating abroad.

Prices peak in and around Marbella and the Golden Mile, so look beyond these areas if you want more bang for your buck.

Head west to Manilva for much better value. Here you can easily buy a two-bedroom townhouse, or even a three-bedroom property with sea views for just under £300k.

Nearby La Duquesa also offers excellent value. You can find a resale three-bedroom townhouse on a golf course for around £300k following a price reduction.

Another option is to head east of Málaga into La Axarquía, or inland, where a family house in a whitewashed village such as Cómpeta is well within budget.

The coast is still an option too. In Torrox, you can find a lovely traditional four-bedroom townhouse in the heart of the old town for around £250k, or even a three-bedroom townhouse in fashionable Nerja for around £300k.

Murcia

What can £300k buy in Murcia?

Murcia continues to be one of the fastest-growing areas for property buyers in Spain. Buyers are discovering its authentic Spanish feel, improved airport access and greater affordability than the Costa Blanca.

Golf resorts remain particularly popular. Around 30,000 foreign golfers own homes in Murcia – the third-highest figure of any Spanish region, behind Andalusia and the Valencia region.

British buyers account for around one in every six property purchases in Murcia. Many spend between £100k and £150k, but £300k will buy you a new-build three-bedroom villa in a location such as Sucina.

You can also have change from your budget when buying a two-bedroom, two-bathroom semi-detached villa on Roda Golf.

Hard to beat for style, though, is a contemporary two-bedroom villa in Calasparra with a private pool and outdoor shower.
