Why Caudete?

The first Brits to settle in the town date back to 1707 when it was home to the troops. They lasted about 30 years as the town was fought over by the regions of Valencia and Castilla La Mancha and now it is part of Albacete. The Brits didn´t return until about 20 years ago but they now make up around 5% of the population.

Caudete is superbly located 70 kms from Alicante Airport and Beaches which takes less than an hour. The fabulous city of Valencia is 90 minutes away. It´s far enough inland to be a traditional inland town yet not remote. The infrastructure is superb with the A31 Alicante to Madrid motorway only minutes away and the Valencia to Murcia new road a similar distance. Additionally, the AVE the fast train from Alicante to Madrid has a station about ten minutes away in Villena.

The town has some lovely independent shops as well as the usual supermarkets such as Mercadona. There are cafes on nearly every corner and some excellent food can be eaten in one of the many restaurants around the town. There are no less than four bodegas to visit and enjoy wine tasting.

September 6-10 is fiesta time and the famous Moors and Christian parades draw thousands into the town. The parades of La Entrada and La Enhorabuena take place on September 6 and 9 respectively, being the two events that attract the most visitors. In them, the five local comparsas, including the most popular the Warriors and The Moors parade in squads to the sound of festive music, showing beautiful costumes that in many cases are pure craftsmanship.

The old town has a beautiful network of streets of Muslim and Christian origin that lead up to the remains of the castle. Next to the Castle is the Parochial Church of Santa Catalina, a mixture of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. The town has three unique museums: - The Watercolour Museum of Rafael Requena - The Interpretation Centre of the Cultural Heritage of Caudete - The Salatos Mantos Museum of Our Lady of Grace On the Abadía and Mayor streets; as well as the squares of the Church and Carmen are located several beautiful mansions from centuries ago.

Caudete offers a great landscape diversity where the vegetation typical of the Mediterranean forest dominates: Aleppo pine, pine, Holm oak and Kermes oak, with a great variety, also of shrubs and aromatic plants. The most beautiful natural area of Caudete is Sierra Oliva, more commonly called Sierra Santa Bárbara. Despite it being over 1,000 metres the ascent is gentle and has several routes for both hiking and cycling.
