The park is located on the shores of the of the largest lagoon in Europe - the Mar Menor – protected from the elements by the 22 km La Manga sandbar strip. The historic city and port of Cartagena (easily reached by bus from Los Alcázares) has been inhabited for 2000 years by many different cultures and although there are a few ruins from the Carthaginian ages – most of its oldest monuments and ruins date from the Roman Empire when Cartagena flourished. The 1st century BC theatre, Roman villa with beautiful mosaics, numerous museums, narrow winding streets of the old town with shops, restaurants and bars all add to the wealth of the city known as the “Port of Cultures”.
