Full Description

Eight centuries of history have shaped this château without ever erasing its medieval identity. Behind its ramparts and towers, this former fortress reveals a succession of decorative styles and layouts, from the guardroom to the Second Empire apartments. A distinctive architectural heritage at the heart of a 27-hectare estate, now awaiting a new lease of life.

Located on the edge of Bourbonnais and Berry, around twenty minutes from shops and services, the estate comprises a château with approximately 850 m² of living space, numerous outbuildings and an extensive landscaped park. The property is partially listed as a Historic Monument and requires major restoration work.

The history of the site dates back to the late 12th century, when a watchtower was built during the reign of Philip Augustus. In the 14th century, it became the keep of a powerful fortress, surrounded by ramparts, corner towers and deep moats. Part of this defensive system remains visible, including passages built into the thickness of the walls, which once allowed people to move around unseen.

Over the centuries, the fortress became a country residence. Reception rooms opened onto the gardens, and new decorative features enriched the interiors. During the Second Empire, a striking transformation gave it its present-day silhouette, with its steep slate roofs and the keep’s Neo-Gothic crown, whose design is said to be attributed to Viollet-le-Duc.

Inside, the guardroom, chapel, spiral staircases, carved fireplaces, frescoes and period parquet floors bear witness to these different eras. The succession of monumental spaces and more intimate rooms reveals the château’s architectural richness.

The outbuildings, some of which date back to the 18th century, include former service buildings and a large hall once used for receptions.

A 27-hectare landscaped park of meadows, gardens and woodland surrounds the château. Plane trees, giant sequoias and centuries-old trees frame views of the fortress. A pond, two sculpted lions and the remains of an ornamental garden evoke the refinement of the estate, while a vast meadow opens up a view of the château’s imposing silhouette.

Today, this property offers an ambitious restoration project. Its architecture, the variety of its buildings and the size of the estate lend themselves to a range of potential uses, while respecting its heritage character.

Inspired and ready to discover this château? We would be delighted to show you its architecture, history and the possibilities offered by its restoration, and to reveal some of its secrets.
