Kountourata is a small village, with about 60 permanent residents, located in the municipal unit of Livathos in the municipality of Kefalonia, in the south of the island. The settlement is lowland, built at an altitude of 90 meters and very close to the sea. The "kountoureikos gialos" as you will hear the locals call it is the beach of Kountourata, with golden sand and blue waters.

Kountourata is built between Spartia and Pessada, the small port that connects southern Kefalonia with the northern coast of Zakynthos. They are 15 kilometers from the capital of Kefalonia, Argostoli.

The church of Kountourata is dedicated to Saint Nicholas, who is also the patron saint of the village. The church was severely damaged by the earthquakes that devastated Kefalonia in 1953, but was rebuilt with the care of the locals. Its iconostasis is ornate, with a painting from 1888. According to a marble inscription in the courtyard, Agios Nikolaos of Kountourata had been destroyed by fire earlier, so the 1888 building was the second and the current one, the third. In the church cemetery, one can admire tombstones and funerary monuments of particular artistic value.
