Cortinhola is part of the former and future parish of Benafim, which is a town in the Municipality of Loulé that was the seat of the extinct and future Parish of Benafim, it has an area of 52.69 km² and around 1,069 inhabitants, and therefore a population density of 20.3 inhabitants/km².
The Parish of Benafim, which was created in 1988, was extinguished in 2013, as part of a national administrative reform, to, together with the Parishes of Querença and Tôr, form a new parish called União de Freguesias de Querença, Tôr e Benafim with its headquarters in Querença.
Benafim is 5 km from Alte, 7 km from Salir and 19 km from Loulé, the municipal seat. Between Benafim and Salir there is a plateau known as Rocha da Pena.
Cortinhola is a town further north, where the plateaus and the Algarve mountains mix with some plains and where the lands were not too divided by inheritance, thus maintaining some extensions of land where some agricultural investment may still be justifiable, whether in the production of carob or cork.
