COLONNO
Along the Regina state road, between Argegno and Punta Balbianello, at the foot of Monte Costone, lies Colonno, a picturesque village reflected in the waters of the lake. This area is called “Zoca de l'oli,” meaning “oil basin,” because the waters of the lake are generally as smooth as oil.
The village has ancient origins and, in the Middle Ages, was part of the Pieve dell'Isola Comacina, sharing its fate in the long war between Como and Milan. Once inhabited by fishermen and farmers, it has retained its typical medieval architectural structure with houses built close together.
Behind the village, on the slopes of the mountain, you can see the terraces and walls built in the past to cultivate “fragrant herbs,” which the inhabitants then sold as street vendors, along with fish and fresh dairy products, traveling around the province with baskets on their shoulders. Currently, the village's economy is based mainly on trade and tourism.
The town is crossed by the Valle di Sala stream, which the inhabitants call “Pessetta.” Just outside the town, there is a “bridge” house that preserves the memory of a flood that occurred in 1905. In Colonno, the Camogge waterfall, which overlooks the Regina road, is worth mentioning.
