Chromonastiri is a traditional settlement located 11km southeast of Rethymno, east of the Mount Vrisinas at an altitude of 360 meters. The name means Color and Monastery and probably this name comes by the coexistence of the village and the monastery of Panagia Kera (back to the Second Byzantine and Venetian period). Built around the 12th-13th centuries the village is listed as a historical monument. Visitors will find a war museum, a Venetian villa, two fascinating Byzantine churches (Panagia Kera and Agios Eftihios) and a fantastic landscape.
Just 1 km northwest of the village is Mili Gorge, a wonderful green junglelike gorge with over 30 ruins of old mills.
