Kalyves is a village and seat of the homonymous community of the municipality of Apokoronas in the regional unit of Chania, Crete, built at the entrance of the gulf of Souda. On the hill Kastelli of Kalyves there is the ancient city of Ippokoronio, as well as ruins of Byzantine style, monuments, and monasteries. Kalyves has the White Mountains as a background and is crossed by the river Xydas. The town today has 1,400 inhabitants.
It is said that the Kalyves took their name from the makeshift accommodation (huts) built by the Arab pirates, when they invaded in 828 and occupied the Sarakines area near the village. Another version is that the name comes from the huts that the farmers built near their estates to stay in the summer, without having to return to their village every night.
