Lucca is a medieval walled town in Tuscany which is mostly pedestrian with picturesque piazzas and stone flagged lanes with shops, pretty cafes and some excellent restaurants. Lucca is often referred to as a secret gem and a quieter and more intimate alternative to Florence. The town is encircled by the medieval walls with foot and bicycle paths under the trees. The cobbled streets are filled with 'gelaterie', pastry shops and wonderful coffee shops and 'trattorie'. Lucca has a multitude of old churches, little piazzas, towers and family businesses. Behind many of the arched doors you will glimpse vaulted passageways and beautiful internal courtyards. It is possible to climb one or other of the two highest bell-towers to look out on the old terracotta rooftops of the town and over to the surrounding Tuscan hills. One of the focal points of the town is the oval shaped piazza with entrances at the four points of the compass which stands on the site of a Roman amphitheatre. Puccini was born in Lucca and there is a festival of his operas at the outdoor theatre overlooking a nearby lake. In Lucca itself there is a famous summer music festival throughout the month of July in the large central piazza. (here).

Versilia is the stretch of golden sandy coast from the tip of Liguria to Viareggio. The carnival takes place in the in the weeks preceding Lent. In nearby Forte dei Marmi you can shop with the rich and famous in the upmarket designer shops in the avenues around the pretty central piazza with bars serving refreshing campari.
