The historic center dates back to the 12th century and the church of S. Francesco d’Assisi was a focal point where, during the archaeological excavations, remains of the walls and aqueduct and the ancient Convent of the Capuchin Friars, built on the remains of a castle Norman and the Central Church which was built by the Knights of Malta on the remains of an ancient Byzantine Cenobio were discovered. It is famous worldwide for the ritual of FLAGELLANTI (Vattienti) which, from the Middle Ages and uninterruptedly, takes place in the days of Good Friday and Holy Saturday of the Easter week.
A 5-minute drive takes you to the Marina di Nocera Terinese with its long free beach with many bars and restaurants offering a variety of local dishes and fresh fish, along with many other services; a variety of shops, supermarkets, post office, florist, hairdressers etc. A local weekly market offers typical and fresh products along with various other goods. The towns of Campora San Giovanni and Amantea, are a short distance away and are a variety of shops and boutiques, coffee bars, restaurants / pizzerias, ice cream parlours, pharmacies, post office etc. that blend well with the charming old town where you can stroll through the old streets and enjoy the true atmosphere of Calabria. From Nocera Terinese you can easily reach the Sorgenti spa with the Wellness Centre of Caronte in Lamezia Terme.
