About Location
Alfama is said to be one of the oldest districts of Lisbon and is made up of a wonderful maze of narrow cobbled streets and ancient houses. The streets wind up the steep hill from the Tejo Estuary to the castle. As you wander through this diverse and interesting district, you will see that there are many historic buildings including the Se Cathedral, the National Pantheon the Castle and Saint Anthony’s Church. Originally, Alfama lay outside of the city walls and was an area stricken with poverty and squalor, where only the poorest people lived. And although Lisbon grew into an important port, the district remained of lowly status where sailors and dock workers lived. Today, however, Alfama has shrugged off this grim reputation and gentrification has transformed it into a fashionable artisan district, while still retaining its character and dilapidated charm. Alfama’s labyrinth of streets are best explored by simply getting out and about and getting lost a bit. During this mystery tour, you will find that, around every corner or steep climb, is a delightful tiny plaza, a unique shop, a trendy café or a breathtaking view.
