Set in the soft rolling hills, Casciana Terme is dominated by a castle and since Roman Times it has been famous for the curative thermal waters which gurgle out of the ground at 37.5 degrees. The countryside around Casciana is dotted with beautiful stone farmhouses and rustic cottages overlooking golden meadows. Don't miss the colourful festa in May and taste the local speciality of wild boar. Whether you wish to visit the cultural and historical sites around Casciana Terme or taste the delicacies of the Tuscan region or just relax amid the healing and soothing waters of the springs this town has something for everyone.The little town has a host of restaurants and shops. The coast is on your doorstep. Set halfway between the medieval towns of Volterra and Pisa, the reefs of Castiglioncello and the golden sandy beaches of the Versilia coast can be accessed within half an hour.
In nearby Lajatico, Andrea Bocelli's famous Teatro di Silenzio, a natural open-air amphitheater, hosts some of the biggest names in opera, from all over the world, for a special concert in July each year. Close by too is Volterra, famous for medieval towers and for alabaster; Lucca for the quiet and peaceful elegance of this walled medieval town and San Gimignano, the hilltop village, is famous for beautiful cobbled lanes and tall stone towers which dominate the surrounding countryside. Pisa, with the Piazza dei Miracoli with the Cathedral, the Leaning Tower and Baptistery is well worth a visit. Don’t miss wine tasting at one of the many wine producers in the area and we can recommend Cantine Antinori ((Bolgheri) for an outstanding experience. There are many local festivals over the summer months including a mini palio at Casole d'Elsa with ceremonies and horse race. Other themed festivals include archery, theatre and food and wine festivals.
