La Rabita in Jaen province is placed on the outskirt of Sierra de San Pedro, located northwest of Alcala la Real. Its origin dates back to the Muslim era when it was called Asbatit and todays name came from ribat which is an Islamic religious, military construction. The festivities in honor of the Ascension of the Lord and the Virgen del Carmen are held in mid-May and last several days, with sports and religious activities that culminate in the procession of the Virgin. San José fiesta is also celebrated on March 19. The abundance of water allows the cultivation of irrigated land and fruit trees, in addition to the traditional cereal and olive crops.
