Vlahata is one of the largest and most populous villages of Kefalonia and is located in the southern part of the island. During the Kapodistrian division of the administration of Greece, they belonged to the Municipality of Leivatho, which occupied this part. They have 699 permanent residents, according to the 2011 census and are located on the provincial road that connects Argostoli, the capital of Kefalonia, with Poros, one of its largest ports, at the southeastern end of the island.
The houses in Vlahata are built on either side of the provincial road that crosses the village and are all post-earthquake, as the earthquakes of August 1953 destroyed almost the entire village. The only building left standing then - and still standing today - is the church of Vlahata, Agia Marina. On the day of its celebration, July 17th, a big festival is held in the village with visitors from all over Kefalonia.
Vlahata is built at the foot of Mount Ainos, at an altitude of 187 meters. They have an endless view of the Ionian Sea and northern Zakynthos. Nearby is the historic Monastery of Sissia, said to have been founded by St. Francis of Assisi himself, during his passage through Kefalonia. Vlahata also includes Trapezaki, one of the most beautiful beaches of Kefalonia.
