The lagoons of La Mata and Torrevieja were already used in 1321, the date on which they were ceded by the Crown to the city of Orihuela on the condition that they not be alienated. Later, in 1389, the Crown itself granted the same population the possibility of transforming the Torrevieja lagoon into a reservoir in order to exploit fishing, but the construction of the Acequión that connected it with the sea took almost a century, and It was in 1482, when the infeasibility of the project was verified, as the fish did not enter the lagoon due to the high salinity of its waters. Orihuela renounced the royal donation for this reason.
A Royal Order declared in 1759 the reversion of the property of both lagoons to the State. A few years later, the first salt extraction tests were carried out in the La Mata lagoon.
