The Vila de Gracia neighborhood was the main nucleus of the old independent town of Gracia, and what gave it its name.
At first this territory was dependent on Barcelona and was sparsely populated. Between the 16th and 17th centuries, three convents (including the Josepets) and a series of towers promoted by the Barcelona bourgeoisie were built near the existing, isolated farmhouses. During the first half of the 19th century, that small agricultural center became the most important town on the Barcelona plain, thanks to its progressive industrialization, taking advantage of the availability of free land. The convenience of integrating it into Barcelona was raised with increasing force, in parallel with the progressive development of the Cerdá Plan, then in full expansion. Thus, starting in 1880, projects of common interest were born, such as the Paseo de Gracia, which linked the town with the big city following the old path. He joined Barcelona again in 1897.
