SELLIA

Sellia is located at an altitude of 328 metres, south of Kefalas, near the eastern end of the Vamos hills. The name of the village probably derives from the word séli, which means “mountain pass” in the Cretan dialect. The village is estimated to have been founded during Ottoman rule.

VAMOS

Vamos is a small town, part of the municipality of Apokoronas, serving as its historical capital. It is situated on a small hill, at an altitude of 190 metres above sea level, about 25 kilometres from Chania. In Vamos, one can find several restaurants, snack bars and shops in the village, as well as many public services, such as a fully equipped health centre, schools, a police station and the regional court.

The village is said to have been founded by Arab invaders during the 8th century, which sought refuge in Crete after being expelled from Andalusia. The first official record of the name (Vamo/Vamu) is found on a map of 1577 made by Francesco Barozzi.

Right below the main square, at the top of the hill, one can find the old quarter of Vamos, which is devoted to preserving local heritage and customs. Within this context, several old houses have been refurbished to provide accommodation for visitors.

The town offers all amenities and facilities, such as an art gallery, some picturesque, traditional cafés, tavernas, shops selling local products and more.

GEORGIOUPOLIS

Located at only a 10-minute drive away from the house is the seaside town of Georgioupolis which offers an idyllic setting, lined with abundant eucalyptus trees that greet visitors with their dominating presence. Small in size but blessed with natural wonders and beauty, Georgioupolis is home to many birds and animals.

You can take a leisure walk along the harbour and enjoy a delicious meal in one of the traditional tavernas and restaurants, which offer scenic views of the harbour.

The liveliest part of Georgioupolis is its main square and it is considered to be one of the prettiest village squares of Crete.

The Church of Agios Nicholas, dedicated to the patron saint of sailors is one of the most popular sights located in the harbour. The picturesque white chapel sits gently on a manmade rock jetty with mesmerising sea views as a backdrop.

The beaches of Georgioupolis

Both sides of the harbour are lined with a stretch of coastline. Kalivaki beach, situated to the west of the harbour has shallow waters and spectacular dunes. It is here that the River Almyros flows directly into the sea. The beach is protected from the winds making it the ideal choice for families with children. There are organised facilities on the beach as well as a few tavernas serving snacks and seafood dishes. Georgioupolis Beach is a 10 kilometre stretch of beach, awarded with a Blue Flag certification. An organized beach where you will find an array of water sports facilities.
