Xativa, is only a 10 minute drive away from the house through the tunnel, quite interesting going through the tunnel, when you come out of the other side into Canals area, it is as though you are travelling in a plane that is coming into land you are so high. Xativa has the second most beautiful castle in Spain. It is built over two mountain tops and is large. The castle has had parts of it restored so you can understand how life was in the days when the castle-topped the old walled city. Xativa is a fascinating place to visit and stay for lunch or dinner in the cobbled streets of the old town in one of the many beautiful restaurants found there. Friday and Saturday nights during the summer months go to the market place to get yourself a table and pull up a chair enjoy a dinner or tapas and watch the free entertainment on offer. A fabulous vibrant place, full of life, lovely to take visiting guests when they are over for a taste of real Spain.

L'Olleria, L'Olleria is a fascinating place, and its main industry is the manufacturing of glass. There is a sizeable ExPat community here. The place to meet people is in the Spanish classes at the Adult Education Centre in the centre of town. There is a yoga studio in the town which you can go to. A Pepa charity shop that is run by the English and they are always looking for volunteers to help out. They organise various outings and get-togethers throughout the year with the helpers. The Pepa shop is by the Tabac's at the end of town before the banks and the health centre which also has an emergency unit. There is a Rastro in Ontinyent and Xativa which are run by the Brits. There are various stalls with bric a brac and a great place to meet other Ex-Pats. The Rastros are open on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 2 pm Lots of notice boards with different things like clubs etc, that might interest you.

There are painting (Art) classes held in the town, and the artwork is displayed in an exhibition the old Palace which has been restored and is now a lovely museum, it is also open to the public on certain days. L'Olleria has festivals throughout the year including the Christians and the Moors.

Flamenco class if you're interested to learn this form of dance is held in Canals, but they are all Spanish people, this was the case when I went. They all make you very welcome. There will be lots of outings once you can dance, again very Spanish no Expats here. However, mixing in a social way like this with the Spanish people helps you with your practical Spanish you'll learn to speak it much faster plus, it is great fun and will open up invitations to peoples house, paella lunches on a Sunday and is a great way to integrate into their party culture.

Ontinyent, Another exciting city with an old and more modern part, great for shopping for clothes, the town is known for Textiles. Great shops, hairdressers and an excellent shopping Mall. There is also a cinema at the top of the Mall. You can hire headphones at the cinema so you can listen to the film in English if you want to. Two excellent restaurants come to mind, La Cuna and Paixixi. These two restaurants are first class and well worth booking.

Gandia Gandia is a lovely place with a long white sandy beach; The beach is dotted with beach bars to get refreshments at and to sit and watch the world go by and do a little people watching. It's a very Spanish area. There is a fabulous restaurant at the end of the pier near the Yacht club which, is well worth visiting for lunch, it is a bit like being on a boat out at sea.

Just 40 mins by car takes you to the city of Valencia offers the same main attractions for tourists to see the city. You can choose to see it by an open-top bus or a horse-drawn carriage. Both are fabulous ways to explore this magnificent city with its beautiful architecture, ancient and modern and its rich history. The open-top bus has tour guides to tell you all you need to know in your language which you listen to through earphones it is fascinating to be informed of the history as you ride through the city. The Cathedral in Valencia is said to hold the Holy Grail and is well worth visiting. If you go on a Sunday and go to the Virgin Square, left of the Cathedral's main entrance if you're lucky, the Spanish Dances will have set up a stage, and they will thrill you with some spectacular traditional dancing, all decked out in traditional costume. Such a great thing to do as you sit and while away an hour as you drink a coffee or sip on an iced tea or coffee and watch this free spectacle.

The Basilica is also well worth a visit in The Virgin Square. You also have the coast, the modern part of the city and the Albufera where you can take a boat out and watch the sunset.
On the road to Valencia, you will find Massanasa, here is an excellent place for shopping; this is an out of town shopping area with shops like Ikea, furniture shops, electrical outlets and a large Leroy Merlin for hardware and gardening supplies. There is a large shopping Mall with famous brand shops. There is also a cinema at the top of this Mall and restaurants serving all types of international food.
