Santa Luce is immersed in the Pisan hills, a few kilometers from the coast and dotted with fields of wheat and olive trees that stretch as far as the eye can see. In spring it is tinged with intense lilac and filled with the intense scent of lavender in bloom. The main centre is clearly of medieval origin, the town has preserved the plan of an ancient feudal village tightened in circles around its castle. Santa Luce is located in the hinterland of the Etruscan Coast, a landscape that inspired the Macchiaioli painters. The Oasis of Santa Luce, for example, is the demonstration that luckily sometimes nature beats man: this huge lake was artificially born from a dam, but then the vegetation made it a hospitable place forall those migratory birds that stop there during their long journey to Africa. Nowadays it’s a nature reserve and a an unmissable stop. The scenery of Santa Luce also lends itself to contemplation and silence: it is no coincidence that the Lama Tzong Khapa Institute – one of the most important Buddhist centers in Europe – has been in existence from many years in the town of Pomaia.
