Douliana (or Dhouliana) is located at an altitude of 175 meters on the north side of the hills of Vamos, between the villages of Tsivaras and Gavalohori. The village’s name is said to be related to the Doulopolises of antiquity but most probably the name has its root to the Slavic word for root “dol”, which means “lowlands” or “valley”. This interpretation seems more probable, as the village is indeed located between two valleys.? Douliana is a great example of traditional architecture, which has been preserved to a large extent thanks to the sensitivity and efforts of the locals and foreigners who have settled here. The Cultural Association of the village has also played a vital role in preserving the traditional character of the village, while maintaining an impressive library in volume and variety. Some parts of the village enjoy great views over the plain to the east and Gavalohori, while others to the sea and Akrotiri. Nature lovers should not omit walking the old path that connects Douliana with Gavalochori, passing through a small gorge and the church of Agios Ioannis, built over the entrance of a cave. ?
