On the outskirts of the village the Monastery of Gonia, one of the oldest on the island was first built in the 13th century and later reconstructed in the 16th century as a Venetian style fortress-monastery. Ottoman cannonballs are still lodged in the outer fortress-like walls. The village is also half an hour's drive to some of the most popular beach resorts on the west coast of Crete like Falassarna.
