The village of Maleme is a settlement that has been popular with tourists since the 1960’s but the beach has miraculously managed to remain untouched by development in many parts. You can always find a peaceful spot even during the busiest months of the summer.

The city of Chania is a 30-minute drive away while the major tourist resort of Platanias is five minutes away if you decide to take the car. You could always walk. Three of the most famous sandy beaches, Elafonisi, Falassarna, Balos Lagoon, are within a one-hour drive or so. Maleme is also the place where the famous WW2 Battle of Crete took place in 1941, with the breathtaking German cemetery still testifying to the 4465 Germans, mostly paratroopers who were killed during the invasion on this place.
