Location:
Fernão Ferro is a portuguese parish in the municipality of Seixal, with an area of 25.26 km².

This parish is composed of the localities of Fernão Ferro, Pinhal do General, Redondos, Quinta das Laranjeiras, Flor da Mata, Foros da Catrapona, Pinhal de Frades and Quinta da Lobateira, Vila Alegre and Fontainhas.

Fernão Ferro confines to the North with the parishes of Aldeia de Paio Pires, Arrentela and Amora and south with the parish of Quinta do Conde, in the municipality of Sesimbra.

Fernão Ferro is the most recent parish in the municipality of Seixal, having been created on May 27, 1993.
According to a legend the parish originates in the name of Fernão Peres, brother of D. Paio Peres. Fernão Peres de Correia, master of the order of Santiago, founder of the village of Paio Peres.

Ferdinand (Iron) Peres was known by the name of Babilon, a cognomen given to him, as well as all the other Crusaders, who in the reign of Sancho II ventured into the lands of Babylon to defend the Tomb of Christ.

The crusader fell into disgrace during the war that opposed Sancho II and his brother, Alfonso II. It was at that time that Fernão Ferro sought refuge in this region. Once installed here he was in charge of collecting tribute to all travelers who came or went to Sesimbra and used the way of Almada.

The nickname of iron was given, possibly, due to the fact that he had the cross of Christ encrusted in his armor of crusader and the handle of his sword, which he always carried with him. Another possible explanation would be the fact that screwing animals, which combined with their corpulence and cruelty, would give rise to the designation.

The locality due to its geographical situation, with good access, good air and close to bathing areas, has undergone, since the sixties, a process of clandestine allotment. In 1969 António Xavier de Lima began selling part of his property, lots. In 1970 the owner, builds a church and parish center, inaugurated by the then Cardinal Cherry. It was in this same year that The Journal of Ferdinand was published for the first time. - REF: HT-LC102021
