The village seems caught in a time warp. It is a peaceful, unspoilt location, yet within strolling distance of small local shop, two bars/restaurants, historic church, doctors and post office. It is set in the region of Pomarance, with the main town of Pomerance about 5 km from the house. Pomarance has good facilities including a large supermarket, a busy weekly market, banks, coffee bars and excellent restaurants. Within 25 minutes you can reach the famous medieval towns of Volterra and San Gimignano with their shops, art galleries and profusion of restaurants. Further afield, the Chianti region and the famous Black Cock wine route are wonderful to explore.

Volterra is an enchanting walled hilltop town with Etruscan roots (4-6 centuries BC) and much later Roman influence. The town's narrow medieval streets and its central piazza are enchanting. The beauty of the 13th century Palazzo dei Priori which sits tall over the piazza, as well as the Palazzo Pretorio across the square, dominate the town. The 'Volterra AD 1398' festival, held on the middle weekends of August, is a local highlight and during these weekends, Volterra is recreated as it was in the late 14th century with shows, events, markets, workshops, music and juggling to enjoy. The town is located in the Valdera region of Central Tuscany between Pisa and Florence where this colourful landscape of rolling hills dotted with medieval villages, castles and lanes flanked with tall dark green cypress trees, epitomises the Tuscan landscape. Meandering through the countryside of Valdera you feel the vestiges of the mysterious Etruscan civilization. In Lajatico the famous tenor, Andrea Boccelli, has created the 'Teatro di Silenzio' where the natural landscape creates a breathtaking setting for an open air music and opera festival attracting top musicians from all over the world for special performances every July. Casciana Terme has thermal waters and new spa facilities, with indoor and outdoor pools, massages and treatments and it is a pretty town with a lovely central piazza with cafès serving the local wine. The città d’arte (cities of art) nearby include Volterra, San Gimignano, Palaia and Florence all of which offer wonderful history, art and architecture to explore.
