He was born here in the early 16th century. Turgut Reis raised from humble origins to command the Ottoman navy, conquered Corsica and returned to Istanbul with a great number of prisoners. In 1595, during an attempt to take Malta, he was killed. Near Turgutreis Town there is a statue of him.
This resort is a new, middlemarket resort, popular with British and French tourists, families and middle-aged couples. In the centre there are small bars, cafes and hotels. People are friendly and helpful, and the sunset is spectacular. A few miles outside town are ruins of the walled city, ancient fountains and graveyards of the Myndos civilisation. Although it has developed rapidly in recent years, the village still retains an unspoilt quality. On the SW coast of Turkey, at the point where the Aegean Sea meets the Mediterranean Sea (15 mls W of Bodrum town, 167 mls S of Izmir, 130 mls NW of Dalaman airport, 45 mls SW of Bodrum airport). Turgutreis is positioned on the tip of the Bodrum peninsula, backed by hills. A famous weekly Saturday market attracts many people and is popular to buy clothes, souvenires and fresh local produce. 14 small coastal islands offer great possibilities for boat, diving and sailing tours. Winds also make it popular for windsurfing sports. The surrounding volcanic landscape is interesting and offers possibilities for walking and trekking tours.
Daily boat trips can be taken from Turgut Reis departing to Gumusluk, Karaincir, Akyarlar and Yalikavak. Ferry services to the Greek Islands are available at the ferry port in Turgutreis marina. Within the marina is D Marin Beach Club/Restaurant and numerous eateries, designer shops and cafes.
