The coast is nearby, where the reefs of Castiglioncello and the golden sandy beaches of the Versilia coast can all be accessed within half an hour. The countryside around Casciana is dotted with beautiful stone farmhouses and rustic cottages overlooking golden meadows. Casciana hosts a festa in May with the wonderful slow cooked wild boar with polenta, a regional specialty.
In the immediate vicinity of Lari are many essential services: there are supermarkets, a pharmacy, a bank and a post office and just 10 minutes away, in Pontedera, is a main train station, cinema, theatre and hospital. At Castelfalfi, 30 kms away, is a spectacular new gold and spa resort in stunning Tuscan countryside and yachting is available at a new marina in Marina di Pisa.
The cultural centres of Tuscany are all close by. In Lajatico is the famous Teatro di Silenzio, a natural open air theatre where Andrea Bocelli, the famous tenor, and world famous opera stars gather for a special performance in July each year. The medieval village of Volterra is famous for alabaster marble and San Gimignano for beautiful cobbled lanes and tall stone towers which dominate the surrounding countryside. Pisa with the Piazza dei Miracoli full of Romanesque architecture, the famous leaning tower and the baptistery is just 30 km, and offers the opportunity for a stroll along the Arno river, whilst admiring the classic bridges. Within easy reach is also the elegant town of Lucca with beautiful piazzas and ancient walls where bicycles are available to spend a great day out and Lucca summer music festival attracts some great names in wonderful surroundings.
