Built in the eleventh century by Nivelon I, seneschal of the Count of Blois, on the ruins of the Carolingian village of Saint Victor, the castle of Fréteval is one of the symbols of the struggle between the Counts of Blois, on which it depends, and Vendôme (the Anjou). Geographically a castle of steps, it was the Mecca of the tumultuous relations between the Plantagenets and the Kingdom of France2 : meeting between Thomas Becket and Henry II King of England, the Battle of Fréteval in 1194 between Richard the Lionheart and Philippe Auguste, where the latter lost the Seals of France (hence the creation of the post of Keeper of the Seals).
