Set in a hilltop village in the middle of the triangle between Florence, Siena and Pisa in the area of Val di Cecina which boasts beautiful Tuscan countryside and rich historical heritage. The village has lovely cobbled lanes and in true Tuscan style sellers arrive in the village piazza each week with vegetables, fruit, bread and specialist regional cuisine. There are many popular festivals over the summer weekends. The food, of course, is delicious with game specialities inland and seafood specialities on the coast. There are restaurants in Volterra and the surrounding countryside that are very good value. Volterra is where Stephanie Meyer's popular novel, New Moon (The Twilight Saga), now a film, is set. To get lost in the cobbled streets and piazzas is to breathe in the authentic air of Tuscany from another era. The area around Volterra abounds with hilltop villages, vineyards and olive groves and the villages have a rich festival heritage with many over the summer months including concerts, medieval pageants and food and wine tasting. Local wine is available in the supermarkets or sold over the counter at the bars and restaurants. A visit to the famous Tuscan ‘cantinas’ or wine makers offers a pleasant day out and you will come home with some of the best of the local wine and we can highly recommend the Cantina Antinori in the town of Bolgheri.

Montecatini Val di Cecina is a medieval town overlooking the green valley. The countryside extends from the mountains to the east, through the vineyards terraced on the low hills and down to the Mediterranean scrub with pine woods and brooms to the west. The golden hills are planted with orchards, vineyards and olive groves. The area is scattered with historical towns and medieval villages, castles and country churches and a landscape with golden meadows, vineyards, olive groves and fields of sunflowers. Caught in a time warp, entering the village is like stepping back to where time stands still. Val di Cecina is in the heart of Tuscany nestled between Pisa, Florence and Siena. It is the place to be for nature enthusiasts: from the village, you can follow a variety of different nature trails that take you through enchanting historic sites, such as a bridge crossing the torrent or scenic vista points offering views of the Val di Cornia and the Gulf of Piombino. The thermal baths of Bagnone, a Hellenistic structure which dates from the 3rd century BC, now re-opened to the public after undergoing archaeological digs and a transformation and it is now a wonderful place to enjoy. The location is a forms a perfect base from which to enjoy the treasures in the whole of Tuscany.
