Lari is one of the hidden gems in Tuscany, a medieval hill town with a castle on top surrounded by a little borgo; it is a beautiful, medieval, walled town. Lari is very popular for its "sagra" ,the cherry festival in May; the festival showcases different types of cherries grown in the region and there are various stands where visitors can sample twenty different types of cherries and sample liquors and sweets made traditionally from these cherries. In the old town of Lari, inside the Castle, stands a large yellow building. It is the small pasta factory Pastificio Famiglia Martelli. Here, with vintage machinery, a semolina pasta is created in the traditional way.

The town is located in the Valdera region of Central Tuscany between Pisa and Florence. This colourful landscape of rolling hills dotted with medieval villages, castles and lanes flanked with tall dark green cypress trees, epitomises the Tuscan landscape. Meandering through the countryside of Valdera you feel the vestiges of the mysterious Etruscan civilization. Here Andrea Boccelli was born and bred and it is in the heart of Valdera in Lajatico that the famous Teatro di Silenzio (the Theatre of Silence) where natural landscape creates a breathtaking setting, and in the summer months some of the biggest names in opera come for a special performance.

Casciana Terme has thermal waters and spa facilities and is a pretty town with piazzas and cafès serving the local wine. The città d’arte (cities of art) include Volterra, San Gimignano, Palaia and Florence.
