Tarouca is an idyllic town in the Viseu region of North Portugal, the municipality of Tarouca extends over an area of 102 km2, having a resident population of approximately 8,500 inhabitants. The town is located in the transition zone between the Beiras and the Alto Douro, which gives it different characteristics. There is a contrast with beautiful olive groves, vineyards and orchards of apple and pear trees and with a relatively scattered and structured settlement along the roads. In the most mountainous areas the dominant tree cover consists of chestnut and oak trees, and several pine forests cover the hillsides.
Tarouca town itself is well equipped with a selection of cafes, traditional restaurants, a cinema, shops and supermarkets. There are some outstanding tourist attractions nearby, such as the Roman Ucanha Bridge and Tower, which straddles the River Varosa.
Tarouca is 15 minutes drive (10km) from Lamego, and 1.5 hours drive from Porto. It is situated on the Douro Valley wine route, with the region’s most famous sparkling wine, Murganheira, outstanding winery and cellars situated close by.
Tarouca is an excellent base for tourism activities, whilst keeping within the traditional Portuguese culture. There is a weekly market, and a series of wonderfully entertaining and well organised cultural events held here throughout the year.
