Laon, known as "La Montagne Couronnée" with it's old, medieval city sitting high on the rock crowned by the cathedral and overlooking the newer low town, is the administrative centre of the Aisne department in Picardie and sits in the border close to Champagne (Reims is less than an hour away). Almost unknown outside of France, this beautiful town with a population of only around 30.000 is not only one of the most "French" towns to visit but is also admired by the French themselves as a model. The 12th century cathedral in the centre of the old city was the model for later versions notably Chartres and even Notre Dame in Paris.
The lower town is a mix of residential and commercial property and is a thriving city centre with wide boulevards of shops, bars, restaurants and hotels. The original town, the fortified city, is home to the administrative builings but still retains small streets of private housing. made to close it.
