St Jean, with its train station, regular bus service, and access to the motorway system, is conveniently placed to visit cities such as La Rochelle, Saintes, Niort, Poitiers, Nantes, Angoulême, Cognac, Bordeaux as well as numerous fascinating places of historic and cultural interest. Spain is within easy striking distance, for instance Bilbao is a 4 hour drive. The town has natural hot springs beneath it, and soon our huge Napoleonic barracks are to be developed into the local spa-hotel. On the outskirts are the usual large retailers: supermarkets such as Lidl and LeClerc, 24-hour petrol stations, Bricomarché for your DIY needs, Gitem for electrical goods and so on.

We love our town of St Jean d’Angély. It has always been friendly and welcoming and has many clubs and associations including an excellent centre for helping new arrivals in the area. We will be sad to leave our grand charentais house, but we now need to downsize due to our changing circumstances.
