Cerdà designed the corners in order to separate the crossroads from the road traffic – bear in mind that traffic in those times also consisted of animal traffic! This chamfered edge was more practical in that day and indeed in this day.

Another interesting aspect of the chamfer is that whichever way the buildings are there is always one edge facing south and one facing north. The streets are 20 meters wide except for Aragon which is 30 meters. This is because the railway originally passed along Aragon. this has now been placed underground.
