Lucca is a medieval walled town in Tuscany which is mostly pedestrian with picturesque piazzas and stone flagged lanes with shops, pretty cafes and some excellent restaurants.
Lucca is often referred to as a secret gem and a quieter alternative to the more high-season tourist city of Florence (75 km). The town is encircled by the medieval walls foot and bicycle paths under the plain trees. The cobbled streets abound with pastry shops and bicycles; visitors are more likely to be knocked down by an ambling bike than a car!
Lucca has no wide roads but a multitude of old churches, little piazzas, towers and family businesses. Behind many of the arched doors you will glimpse vaulted passageways and beautiful internal courtyards.
It?s possible to climb one or other of the two highest bell-towers to look out on the old terracotta rooftops of the town and over to the surrounding Tuscan hills.
One of the focus points of the town is the circular piazza with entrances at the four points of the compass and stands on the site of the town?s Roman amphitheatre.
Puccini was born in Lucca and there is a festival of his operas in the outdoor theatre overlooking a nearby lake. In the town itself there is a famous summer music festival in the large central piazza.
