Daya Nueva is ideally located just 8km from the coastal village of Guardamar, the local capital of Orihuela 18km and the provincial capital of Alicante (and airport) are only 44km away.

The name of Daya Nueva comes from the Arabic word “Daya” which means a small closed depression, both Daya Nueva and Daya Vieja being very low lying with Daya Nueva being 5 metres above sea level.

Daya Nueva in 2005, had 1562 inhabitants and a surface area of 7,10km2 but today the numbers have almost doubled due to the popular attraction of living in a typical Spanish village by the british and has grown immensely in size in the last 2 years.

The locals are known as “Dayeros” and the village itself was separated from Daya Vieja in the first half of the last century. Daya Nueva belonged, up until 1707, to the town of Orihuela and was joined up with Daya Vieja as one village, the villages split from Orihuela in 1833 and being segregated from Daya Vieja from 1791.

The village is mainly agricultural growing citrus fruits, oranges and lemons and vegetables and the leaves from the “morera” (white mulberry tree) which is frequently seen around the surrounding countryside is used to feed silk worms the irrigation coming from the irrigation channels which flood the fields.

The local fiestas are on the 29th September celebrating San Miguel Arcángel, these fiestas last for about a week and the whole village revolves around the local daily festivities.

The 15th May is the local “Romeria” (San Isidro) where it is custom to dance the night away to disco music and cook your own supper on BBQ´s.

There is a surprisingly wide selection of bars and restaurants for a small village from the local “quiosco” at the childrens playground to A la Carte in a large Typical Spanish restaurant.
