A cluster of houses, a couple of tavernas, a long sandy beach and a working harbour - this is Astrakeri, on the northern coast of Corfu. Within an easy drive of the more bustling holiday resorts of Roda and Sidari, Astrakeri is a world away from them in tempo and atmosphere.
There are two tavernas - one just across the lane from Sandy Land - that are popular with locals as well as tourists, and serve traditional Greek meals, specializing in fish - caught by the taverna owners the same day.
This plot of land - with its own direct access to the beach - is reasonably priced considering its location. There really are very few available plots that lead straight onto the sand, without a road, or track in between.
Further along the beach to the east is a small hotel but apart from this the distant view towards Roda and Acharavi is the only sign of larger scale tourism.
