Forcoli is a sweet village with some excellent services. The Jolly Forno has the most excellent focaccia, the Antica Gelateria has excellent ice cream and there is great pizza at Pizzeria Lalo. The Antica Liquorifico Morelli is famous, from 1911, and is full of italian liquors. There is also a bank, post office, pharmacy and mini-market. It is lovely to walk along the cobbled lanes, steep in parts, which wind up the hill to the impressive church of San Frediano which looks over the town, and passes under a majestic bridge with three arches. Nearby Palaia is larger. It is a historic town in the area of Valdera in Central Tuscany, steeped in tradition and where you can still visit the old olive press, the antique wine cellars and the rooms where the olive oil was stored in large terracotta vases. Mainly an agricultural area, Palaia has a colourful history which can be seen at the excellent interactive museum in the town. In the countryside around Palaia some of the best produce of Tuscany is grown with excellent wines, olive oil and white truffle. The restaurants offer traditional Tuscan cuisine and the markets offer a true feel of the Tuscan heritage. There are shops, bars, restaurants, banks and post-offices in the town.

Valdera is a rich and diverse area of Central Tuscany between Pisa and Florence. This colourful landscape of rolling hills dotted with medieval villages, castles and lanes flanked with tall dark green cypress trees epitomise the Tuscan landscape. The area is scattered with historical towns and medieval villages, castles and country churches and a landscape with golden meadows of wheat dancing in the breeze, vineyards, olive groves and fields of sunflowers.
