Description complète

We are privileged to be able to market this unique and absolutely stunning four bedroom property, situated in the most beautiful setting and with views of both the sea and the White Mountains. For anybody looking for their dream home, look no further.

Location

The Mill is in a secluded and tranquil location situated about 500 feet above sea level on a gently sloping hillside about 1km from the village of Pontikiana. It offers stunning views over the Bay of Hania with the Rodhopou Peninsula to the north, as well as the backdrop of the Lévka Óri mountains to the south.

The nearest mini-markets in Tavronitis are about a 10 minute drive on a quite single tarmac road down through the olive groves. Furthermore, the picturesque fishing village of Kolymbari provides a bank, post office, pharmacy, supermarkets, restaurants and sea front tavernas, the latter offering fresh fish and authentic Cretan dishes, and is about a 15 minute drive from The Mill.

The interchange at Tavronitis on Crete’s major east/west highway (called the ‘New Road’) is approximately 10 minutes from The Mill. The sophisticated Venetian Harbour town of Hania, with its Archaeological and Naval museums, markets and delightful inner and outer harbour side restaurants, and maze of narrow stone streets with lively bars, authentic tavernas and craft shops, is about a 30 minute drive from The Mill.

Additionally, Chania Airport (CHQ) and the port of Souda are approximately a 35 minute and 45 minute drive away respectively. The nearest beach is a 10 minute drive from The Mill, and the sandy beaches at the resorts of Platanias and Agia Marina are about 20 minutes away.

Renovation

The renovation work commenced on 10 May 1999, and was completed in December 2000.

The Mill is the only renovated building in the original ‘Metdhi’, and is surrounded by now neglected stone buildings and rubble from a bygone day. At the time of preparing these particulars, the adjoining land and stone buildings are for sale.

Works involved stabilising the original structure; construction of the rear Ground Floor terrace; construction of a reinforced concrete ring beam at eaves level; lining the stone walls with pneumatically sprayed concrete; construction of a new roof; replacement of the timber Mezzanine floor; internal partitioning; plumbing and electrical installations; internal and external rendering; second fix joinery and decorations.

Accommodation

Ground Floor

Combining nostalgia and home comforts with a rural, secluded setting and panoramic sea views, The Mill can accommodate up to ten people.

The Mill is accessed from the Ground Floor, where one enters a large open plan Living area containing two of the original stone arches.

The Living area also accommodates a small Study area (there is a good WiFi connection), Shower Room, TV and Utility Room complete with washing machine, tumble drier, iron and ironing board. This area also displays one of the original three metal ‘cork screw’ olive presses standing like a sculpture in which the olive ‘mulch’, or paste, was placed in rope sacks for its final ‘cold’ pressing.

A small flight of tiled steps leads down to a spacious Dining Area and Kitchen. The Dining Area and Kitchen are clustered around the original ‘four stone’ mill rollers which form the central feature of this area, and look and operate much as they did 325 years ago.

This ‘four stone’ mill provides evidence that olive oil production at The Mill was on an ‘industrial’ scale, and not just for local consumption.

The ‘farmhouse’ style Kitchen is equipped with an electric cooker and fridge/freezer with integral ice making facilities.

A hallway leads to two triple Bedrooms, one to the left and the other to the right. Both Bedrooms, which feature the original Venetian arches, have three single beds, and each room has its own private En-suite Bathroom. One of these Bedrooms originally housed two ‘settlement’ tanks, and the other l
