The structure, built in the second half of the fourteenth century by the Malaspina family, had the function of controlling the road system at the bottom of the valley, of particular importance for the passage of the Via Francigena. Under the dominion of the Marquis Malaspina Bagnone it became an independent feud (1351). The perfectly preserved medieval village fascinates visitors with its characteristic stone walls and the ancient craft shops among the arcades of the old market. Near the boundary wall of the villa of the Counts Ruschi-Noceti there is the church of San Nicola, inside which there is a wooden pulpit of the 13th century. Near Bagnone there is the village of Treschietto, famous for its tasty onions, but also for the ruins of its castle overlooking the ravine of Mount Orsaro. Heading towards Iera you will find the majestic chestnut woods, while in Vico you can admire the ancient water mills. Here the excellent chestnuts of the Apennines are still ground to produce the sweet flour typical of the area.  Also worth visiting in the surroundings of Bagnone are the village of Castiglione del Terziere with its castle and the parish church of Saints Ippolito and Cassiano. For theatre lovers, in Bagnone we find the Municipal Theatre "Ferdinando Quartieri" which, in collaboration with Fondazione Toscana Spettacolo onlus, the first multidisciplinary circuit in Italy, offers every year a rich series of theatrical events. It was built at the turn of the '30s and '40s, after the closure of the oldest Teatro dell'Accademia dei Ravvivati (1774), which took place in 1928.
