Local Area
Palomares is a Spanish town and district belonging to the municipality of Cuevas del Almanzora, in the province of Almería. It is located in the eastern part of the Levante Almeriense region. On the Mediterranean coast, near this town is the mouth of the Almanzora River and the towns of Vera-Playa, Villaricos, Cabuzana, Las Rozas, Las Herrerías, Desert Spring Golf and La Algarrobina. The area's main economic activities are tourism, the agricultural sector and fishing.
The Mediterranean Sea bathes the coastline of the municipality of Cuevas del Almanzora along a stretch of 14 kilometers and within 263 square kilometers. The rugged, jagged coastline, interspersed with shallow sandy bays, is ideal for snorkeling and sunbathing. Villaricos is a small fishing village on this coast, with a port and marina, and a variety of cozy tapas bars, shops and restaurants. The town of Cuevas del Almanzora is named for the many caves that were once inhabited in the Almanzora river valley, and in fact, some are inhabited to this day. Today Cuevas is a thriving market and agricultural town with a booming economy and rapid economic growth. Renowned in Andalusia for its Semana Santa, Semana Santa celebrations, the old town of Cuevas has a certain charm. There are museums with artifacts dating back to the Neolithic and the church is magnificent. The township is also home to Desert Springs Golf Resort, a world-renowned Arizona desert-style golf course.
The current location of Cuevas was chosen by different cultures and civilizations that have written Mediterranean history: Greeks, Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Iberians, Romans, Goths, Arabs and Christians, many of whom have crossed swords for their domain and control. This area has been densely populated since the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods, as shown by the excavated sites in Fuente Álamo and Villaricos. In 1488 Christian troops conquered the city without a fight, the Arabs were subjugated and forced to embrace the Christian faith until their revolt and subsequent expulsion in 1570. Pirates participated in the sack of Cuevas in 1573 and it is still possible to travel through three centuries of 19th century art and architecture just by visiting some of the local historical sites.
Cuevas is also the capital of motorcycling hosting the Supercross world championships and many other sports facilities are being built as Cuevas also hosted events at the 2006 Mediterranean Games.
Thursday is market day here when the streets are bustling with vendors and buyers and the local cafes are full of customers trying the unique and tasty tapas. Sundays are market day in Villaricos, Wednesdays in Palomares, definitely not to be missed. The southern limit of the municipality joins Vera, a small town about 10 km from the coast with magnificent beaches on its eastern limit. Market days here are on Saturdays and possibly one of the best in the area.
