If youre travelling out to your European holiday home this summer, make sure youre not taking any unnecessary health risks new figures from the Department of Health reveal only 50 per cent of Britons have a European Health Insurance Card(EHIC).
The EHIC card offers healthcare in EU countries should you fall ill or become injured abroad, but only about 30 million Britons have signed up. Valid for five years, the card also covers UK citizens travelling to Iceland, Norway and Switzerland as well as the EU.
Although you may still need to pay for your care if you have an EHIC, you can seek reimbursement when back in the UK if this is not possible in your holiday destination.
An EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance the cost of repatriation to the UK,for example, is not covered. www.ehic.org.uk
