Find out more about Jonnie Irwin, presenter of A Place in the Sun: Home or Away? and A Place in the Sun: Winter Sun
Jonnie Irwin shows Essex couple Shelley and David Warner just how far their £230,000 budget can go since property prices crashed in Florida's Sunshine state.
Police officer David Warner and his wife Shelley from Essex are looking for a home in the Daytona beach area of Florida. They intend to use the property as a base to explore the Americas with their three teenage children and eventually retire there full time. But before they settle down, they have plenty of more active persuits in mind for their new life in the sun. Avid runner and cyclist David is keen to take up boating, whereas Shelley hopes to make the most of the shopping and restaurants on offer.
Daytona, like the rest of the US was badly hit in the economic downturn, but unlike other parts of Florida, prices haven’t yet started to recover, meaning that by looking in this area, David and Shelley could pick up a real bargain. The couple are already familiar with the area and its cheap housing stock, having made an offer on a short sale property in Florida last year, but sadly this fell through, so they are now on the property hunt once again.
Their priority is location, as they would like views of the Intracoastal Waterway, a three thousand mile river network of that runs along the eastern seaboard of the US.
Daytona is just one hours’ drive from the theme parks in Orlando and is the home of stock car racing and the place where 15 land speed world records have been set.
Their budget is £230,000
